The Religion Speech, 21st Century Edition
This is not to say that Romney's Mormonism isn't a potential liability for him. I think it is, but not among those who have already been supporting him. The more attention he draws to his religion, the more of a liability it will become. He should leave well enough alone. (rtwt David Limbaugh)
I disagree. Limbaugh is looking at the challenge from a micro standpoint at the expense of ignoring any macro benefits. Sure we political junkies have concerns it may harm him in Iowa, or more specifically to that religiously bigoted sliver of the far right, but in the larger scheme of things, I don't see how drawing comparisons to John F. Kennedy, a political figure if not universally loved pretty darn close, can be anything but good - - if handled well.
We'll see how it plays but I suspect it will help. When the opportunity arises to compare yourself in a favorable light to the legendary JFK you've got to seize the moment - - especially when you are smarter, more accomplished, and better looking.
Handled correctly, highly publicized with JFK comparisons belabored ad nauseum, this could do a lot more for positive name recognition in the general than any harm it might bring in the primary. I am assuming good faith on the part of America, that religious neutrality will rule the day, basically the same attitude they bestowed on the Catholic JFK. It is the same issue after all, and if America has regressed rather than evolved in that 47 year span this is a much larger story than any single candidate or speech. I guess I am little more optimisitic than Limbaugh.
UPDATE:
Here is link to JFK speech from the 1960 election Houston Ministerial Association Speech, ranked number 9 at American Rhetoric top 100 Speeches. It is good, but I am not so sure it's THAT good.
Also Jonah Goldberg sides with Limbaugh with this Romney's JFK Moment while some guy at Slate sees an upside with this Mitt Romney's Big Speech - John Dickerson.
Typically I wouldn't be all that comfortable against Goldberg and allied with Slate but there you have it.. I don't claim to be contrarian for nothing....
